Located in the southern part of the island—just off the main road from the capital toward Manacor and only 10 kilometers from Palma—lies the Son Gual golf course. Designed by German architect Thomas Himmel, the course opened in October 2007. It was commissioned by German entrepreneur Adam Pamer and has since become one of the most exclusive golf courses in Europe, earning recognition from “The Leading Golf Courses of Spain.”
Playing from the championship tees, the course spans a total of 6,621 meters. This 18-hole, par-72 layout is highly demanding, requiring great precision from the golfer. The course features hand-mown “Pan A-1” bentgrass greens, seamless transitions from fairway to the apron and green, and six teeing grounds per hole—totaling 108 tee positions. The fairways wind past lakes and ponds, following a 1.6-kilometer man-made stream; players must navigate water hazards on 10 of the holes. Golfers frequently praise the expansive bunkers, which are filled with the finest sand. The greens are larger than average, and the holes are set within a beautiful landscape, with some offering views across the Bay of Palma. While the course is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty, certain sections can prove quite challenging.
Naturally, Son Gual Golf also features a driving range, designed with a spacious and exclusive feel. It offers 40 hitting bays, and the practice area includes seven bunker-protected greens, allowing golfers to practice realistic approach shots. Additionally, there are two large putting greens that provide a true challenge for any player. There is a chipping area featuring various grass heights, ranging from 7 mm to over 17 mm—mimicking the transition into the semi-rough. A pitching area allows for shots of up to 60 meters toward a green flanked by two deep practice bunkers. Set on a gentle, downhill-sloping terrain, this area offers a wonderful variety of target greens.
Golfers can also relax on the clubhouse terrace, which provides a breathtaking view of the magnificent landscape of Son Gual. Furthermore, the owner has established eight vineyard plots on the property, home to 3,500 vines; the grapes harvested here are used to produce the club’s own wine. The expansive grounds are also dotted with numerous olive trees, and golfers can purchase Son Gual’s own olive oil at the pro shop.
In every respect, Son Gual is an exceptional golf club on Mallorca—one that impresses even those golfers who have already experienced many other courses.
